WHAT IS MIDI?

MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface: a standard means of sending digitally encoded information about music between electronic devices, as between synthesizers and computers. Although an accurate definition, this does not offer much insight as to what data MIDI actually contains. To help gain a better understanding, here is a breakdown of what information is included in a MIDI file:

Notation – Musical notes
Pitch – Frequency of sound
Sustain – Length of note being played
Velocity – How hard or soft a note is played
Vibrato – Variation in pitch
Panning – Distribution of signal (Left, Center, Right)
Tempo – The speed at which the MIDI sequence is played
Level – Volume
